Frame / Meat
DEEP, WIDE HINDQUARTERS
Wallaloo Park is actively involved in the Meat and
Livestock Australia's Merino Validation Project to benchmark our genetics
in the sheep meat industry. Merino Genetic Services provides information
on the genetic potential of our animals, by ranking them for various
production charactertistics in the form of EBV's. The carcase information
for growth rate and carcase merit has been valuable in selecting animals
with the genetic potential to produce superior meat traits.
- Growth Rate - Sale Rams Av 71kgs at 250

Fecundity
PLAIN UNCOMPLICATED EWES ARE THE KEY TO MORE
LAMBS
Current Average weaning 105% - we aim to lift to 125%
rapidly with the current strategies we are using:
- Ewes (2 yrs and over) scanned dry once are culled
- Ewes lost lambs once are culled
- Maidens rearing twins are identified for ET
- Maidens are joined at 10 months of age
- identifying ewes with 4 active teats
- rams with above average scrotal circumference
- testing rams for libido at 1 yr old
- using rams with high serving capacity
- 5 week joining only /teasers in 2 weeks before
Temperament
MAXIMISE THE PROFIT DRIVERS OF WOOL, MEAT
AND FECUNDITY
Merinos must have a good quiet temperament to maximise
the profit drivesr of wool, meat and fecundity. We are ranking our rams
(105) on a flight score at Eye Muscle scanning as 1 yr olds.
TESTIMONIALS
“We have been commited
participants to the SRS concept since 1998 and chose Wallaloo Park
to provide guidance. This decision was made easier after progeny testing
two drops each from four studs with Wallaloo Park proving the best
genetics. We have reduced our micron from 21.5u to 19.5u and maintained
our cut per head. For the past two years we have been involved in
Holmes & Sackett Bench Marking and our sheep ,have been in the
top 20% of the state.”
John & Danny Flanery - Boorwa , NSW
"Our grazing operation
at Deepwater, NSW has a 700mm summer rainfall. For many years we have
used traditional rams from the central west of NSW.Wallaloo Park genetics
gave us a rapid improvement with deep crimp, whitenes, softness &
length in only the first cross. This said a lot about the stability
and depth of the Wallaloo Park genetics. In subsequent years we noticed
how well these wools & sheep have handled the heavy summer rain, especially
Jan 04 when 222 mm of rain fell in 2 weeks. The level of improvment
with each cross is impressive & exciting. The frames are also
getting bigger,longer & more muscular. John,Jenny & Craig
have been wonderful to deal with and the service & support has
been faultless".
Scott Macansh - Deepwater Station - Deepwater NSW
“Our business has been
actively involved with merino classing and fibre measurement for over
40 years. We successfully infused various bloodlines nationwide in
the search for controlled micron reduction and maintaining fleece
weight whilst stabilising SD's to lessen cull rates. Considering there
were 100 commercial and stud flocks involved, consolidating was essential
with Wallaloo Park an obvious choice for most. In representing and
classing many flocks, value for outlay is paramount and this is where
I find selection at Wallaloo Park sales an easy task due to the huge
quality depth. This stud's history of breeding genuine top quality
medium wools on increasingly framier animals make my selections easy.
To promote predictability with breeding certainly adds confidence
to would-be purchasers.”
Bill Walker - Classings P/L - Murray Bridge SA
“Over
the past five years we have introduced Wallaloo Park genetics via
semen sires and good flockies over our typical South Australian ewes.
The improvement in our wool quality has been significant, reducing
micron, increasing comfort factor, with the added benefit of very
low cull rates in our ewe hoggets. We will continue to breed profitable
merinos with the support of the Wallaloo Park team.”
Richard Harkness - Tintinara SA
“The
introduction of Wallaloo Park genetics since 1999 has had an impact
on overall production achievements - heavier fleece weight & lower
micron. By purchasing top sires and using them extensively in Cervical
AI programs along with John’s classing proficiency & expertise,
has seen us make rapid, profitable genetic gain. Under the current
market conditions we are being rewarded for growing a true dual purpose
merino weaning 112% lambs”.
