Walladale Meat Merino Stud is owned & operated
by the Carter Family to cater for demands of the meat industry and to
capitalise on fecundity/fertility developments. It must be appreciated
that these emphasised traits will not take precedence over wool quality.
Poll Genetics
The Poll influence, towards breeding a meat sheep, will be
of unquestionable importance. Due to the genetic ancestral development
of the Poll Merino, desirable carcass virtues are inherent. Extra length
of body and neck extension combined with depth of body are common Poll
traits.
Fecundity
A combination of selection cirteria are being adopted to maximise fecundity/fertility.
it is common knowledge a larger, plain-bodied sheep has superior fertility.
Temperament
E mphasis on relaxed temperament is of paramount importance when striving
for maximum fecundity, recognition of mothering instincts.
Carcass Traits
We endeavour to pursue frame length from tip to toe adding extra value
to meat cuts such as loin length. Heavy, butt shaped hind quarters with
a deep twist most essential for total meat yields. Guidance from
MLA (Meat and Livestock Australia) has bought to our attention that
measuring (scanning) meat traits, takes the guess work out of carcass
assessment, such as eye muscle depth, for depth and body weight.
Wool Quality
Maintaining wool quality on a frame sheep, historically has been difficult.
There will be no forfeiting of wool quality in the Walladale breeding
direction.
Embryo Transfer
This process can be an important tool in accelerating a breeding program.
The donor ewes used for the Walladale ET program were selected from
the Gowandale and Wallaloo Park Studs, taking full advantage of a larger
genetic pool. 10 to 20 lambs from 1 elite ewe in the same breeding season
are invaluable.
